Does Your Business Have a Cold Weather Plan? (Part 2)

11/19/2019 (Permalink)

Snow and ice are piled up on a commercial building If a storm or deep freeze is on the way, having a cold weather plan will help you avoid damage to your commercial property.

Part 1 of this article walked you through developing your winter weather plan to protect your commercial property up to the point when the temperature drops and a storm is pending.

Now, it’s time to detail how you and your employees will address the challenges of a deep freeze, a loss of power or water damage from a burst pipe, ice dam or other cold weather water disaster.

When a winter storm and/or deep freeze is predicted

  • Monitor weather reports for information to gauge the chances of power outages or potential damage.
  • Monitor temperatures in areas of your facility that are susceptible to freezing or significant temperature fluctuations.
  • Prepare for action with sufficient staff and resources. If needed, activate your emergency response team.
  • Prepare for a possible power outage.
  • Clear snow from outside sprinkler control valves and hydrants to keep them accessible.
  • Remove ice dams.

After the storm

  • Walk through and around your facility and property to evaluate any damage.
  • If power was lost, execute your plan to bring electrical loads back on line to prevent power surges that could damage equipment.
  • Monitor snow loads of roofs, especially in areas subject to drifts, and remove snow as needed.
  • Hire a disaster recovery company, like SERVPRO of West Hartford, that can handle winter weather-related damage quickly and completely.

As with most other forces that could threaten the livelihood of your business, winter weather hazards can be made more manageable with preparation and planning. The time you spend before the cold season to handle the challenges posed by snow, ice and freezing temperatures will pay off when a winter disaster threatens your business.
