SERVPRO Puts Safety First at Your Fire or Water Damage Restoration Job
11/24/2020 (Permalink)
Responding to our customers’ emergencies—whether caused by fire, water, storm, biohazard or mold damage—poses risks for our own crews, both at the job site and in our central Connecticut warehouse and headquarters. To make sure that our professionals are always ready to respond to your emergency, we have instituted high standards for employee safety, and we back that up with training, equipment and a process for continuous improvement.
Our safety program begins with our safety coordinator, Rhonda, who has more than two decades of experience in construction and warehouse management. She knows that even small lapses at the worksite can cause real danger and injury, and she has worked to make our safety program better than ever.
Just in the last year, SERVPRO of West Hartford has seen these new safety initiatives:
General Safety Measures
- All our training programs and videos are now offered in English and Spanish.
- Rhonda meets with the crew chiefs every month to review the previous month’s safety stats and to make plans for improvement in training and policies.
Equipment and Product Safety
- Each crew carries a binder that documents our cleaning products, with appropriate applications, required safety equipment and usage instructions. With this information right at the job site, our workers are prepared to answer customer questions.
- Each truck is checked daily for its fire extinguisher, first aid kit and eyewash station. Each truck also carries duffel bags with hard hats, goggles, safety vests, shoulder dolly straps for lifting heavy objects and the cleaning products binder.
- Crew members are trained to accurately fit-test and wear N-95 respirator masks.
- Each worker is trained to safely lift heavy loads with shoulder dolly straps.
Vehicle Safety
- Every crew is assigned its own truck, which improves their familiarity with and safe usage of the vehicle.
- Workers are trained in the safe operation of forklifts.
- All SERVPRO trucks and forklifts are inspected daily.
Fire Safety
- Our crews are trained in the safe usage of fire extinguishers, generators and third plug adaptors.
- Fire extinguishers are inspected and marked with the date, ensuring they are always ready to be used.
- Each piece of equipment and each truck is equipped with a third plug adaptor so that our grounded equipment can be safely used in older homes.
Blood-Borne Pathogen Safety
- Training in the safe handling and disposal of blood-borne pathogens has been updated and enhanced.
- Each crew is issued a blood-borne pathogen duffel bag with hazmat suits, gloves, needle containers, tweezers and sealable bags for waste.
- Secure metal containers are located outside of our facility where bagged blood-borne waste is deposited for final disposal by our vendor.
